Top 10 Minions – Blood on the Clocktower

Blood on the Clocktower is the greatest social deduction game ever created. Minions are arguably the most powerful character type in the entire game, often screwing up the good team’s plans more than the demon. Here are the top ten best minions in the game.

CRITERIA

In creating this list, I’m looking for character types that are not just fun characters, but ones that create the most drama, creativity, and player autonomy.

One of the reasons why I love Blood on the Clocktower is the complex cat and mouse game. The complex strategy. Roles that offer serious strategy and high player autonomy—allowing players to decide how they want to approach the game—will always rank higher.

I’m including minions that create the most drama and complexity, whether I’m watching as a spectator, storyteller, or player.

Finally, I’m including minions that are not particularly overpowered. Most minions have the potential to be more overpowered than any other player in the game. That’s the point! They’re meant to help the demon win!

But in my books, the best minions balance that line between having a notable power, without being too powerful.

Let’s dive in!

10. PSYCHOPATH

I debated this tenth spot the most. So many minions are so very fun. Assassin and Godfather have an extra layer of strategy in deciding who to kill. Pretty powerful. But afterward, they have no ability. The Scarlet Woman is great because it gives the demon an out. Meanwhile, the Boomdandy is fun to play as an outed evil player.

But I’ve gone for the Psychopath for pure entertainment. It’s so chaotic to have a psychopath on the loose in town, especially if you can’t do anything about them. It’s hard to banish them, and they serve as a great distraction for their demon. Since it can cause extra deaths, it’s mildly overpowered. But the balance comes from being outed, thus reducing the evil suspects in town.

Best Psychopath performance: Holly on NRB

9. HARPY

If anything, the Harpy is a minion with a very average power. They do have a fun power though in that they force good players to waste time accusing one another. Sometimes, this can even take away from who they would have actually wanted to nominate (like an actual evil player). The Harpy also gives the player freedom and autonomy to make decisions, such as picking someone to be ‘mad’ about them. There’s more complex strategy that can go into the Harpy than other minions, and that’s why I love it.

8. SPY

Out of all the minions, I think the Spy has to be one of the most overpowered. The Spy not only learns everyone’s role, like the Widow. It continues to wake up and look at the grimoire every night. With the Widow, there’s a balancing act: one player learns that there is a Widow in play. This player, without fail, is always accused of being a self-poisoning widow. The Spy has almost zero drawback other than not having a truly ongoing ability that can break the game. Simply learning everyone’s role at the start of the game is extremely powerful.

So from a game perspective, it’s not the best. But from a player’s perspective, this has to be one of the most fun minions to play. You get all the information!

7. MARIONETTE

Another fun minion to play is the Marionette. With this role, you don’t even know you’re evil. You go about your business like a drunk townsfolk, only to one day find out that you’re evil. The utility of the Marionette creates so much fun gameplay. Demons can always lie to their neighbours about being the Marionette. If the good player has reason not to trust that, this can completely blow up in the demon’s face. Even a real Marionette might not trust the information and decide to blow up the game.

Beyond that, it’s often said that the Marionette is one of the most powerful minions, since a player who genuinely believes they are good will always be more convincing than a player trying to convince you that they are good.

Best Marionette performance: Sullivan on NRB

6. MEZEPHELES

The Mezepheles is easily one of the most entertaining, fun vibe minions. They create an extra evil player, but only through a secret word. Watching them trick another player into saying the secret word is entertaining on its own. And once that ability is done, another evil player is formed, creating another piece of voting power for the evil team. Powerful, without being too powerful.

Best Mezephiles performance: Holly on NRB

5. WIZARD

Out of all the minions, this 2025 addition to the game offers the most player autonomy and creativity. With such an endless array of possibilities for the evil team to inject a bit of fun and chaos into the game, the Wizard can basically do whatever they want. The balancing act to the power of this role is that it comes at a price (such as a Storyteller hint), and it’s only a once per game ability. That’s part of the charm to the Wizard though, making it an extremely palatable minion.

Best Wizard performance: Billy on Mt. Unpleasant

4. CERENOVUS

I don’t love much about Sects & Violets, but without a doubt, it has two of the strongest minions in the game. I don’t even love ‘madness’ as a mechanic. But the Cerenovus just makes any game so much fun to watch. The Cerenovus has the power of forcing another player to lie about their role. It makes this player suspicious, and often throws suspicion onto other players in the process. But beyond else, it injects chaos and fun into the mix, and gives the player so much autonomy in how they go about their role.

Best Cerenovus performance: Kate on Good Time Society

3. PIT-HAG

As another overpowered minion, the Pit-Hag wasn’t one of my favourites when I first learned the game. The Storyteller already works hard enough to string a strong set of characters together, and then the Pit Hag comes in and breaks that. They can turn powerful players into useless ones, and even create new demons. This almost seems unfair.

But as a storyteller, and as a player, the Pit Hag is so fun. It gives players the ability to make wild moves, and even abandon their demon entirely. As a storyteller, I love watching players navigate the role and make crazy choices with it.

Best Pit Hag performance: Carly on NRB

2. DEVIL’S ADVOCATE

The Devil’s Advocate is a fantastic minion that fits its original script so perfectly. When you have a Fool, Leech, Devil’s Advocate and Sailor all in the mix, there can be so many reasons why a player does not die upon execution. And that makes the Devil’s Advocate all the more complex. With many minion abilities, like say the Pit Hag or the Witch, it can become incredibly obvious that you have one in play. With the Devil’s Advocate, there has to be constant speculation. Not only do I love the ability, I love the complexity of strategy involved with the D.A. They can pick themselves, their demon, or even throw suspicion on a good player. An alive D.A. toward the end of the game can almost certainly win the game for their team, making it slightly overpowered. But as far as minion powers go, the D.A. is one that requires the most skill.

Best Devil’s Advocate performance: Ken on NRB

1. POISONER

In the beginning, the Poisoner is all luck based. It becomes semi-powerful, but only if the player gets lucky. But as the game goes on and roles are revealed, a Poisoner’s win equity requires so much more skill and finesse than most minions. They can collaborate with their demon in secret to poison players like the Soldier and Mayor prior to the demon attacking that player in the night. They can poison lock a player to make them look evil, or their information to just be completely false. They can pick a different player every night, making it more likely that they stay hidden. This is a perfectly balanced, requiring so much luck in the early phase of the game, and all skill toward the end.

Best Poisoner performance: Teri on Demon Eyes
